Improvised Structures at the Curwen Studio

A day at The Curwen Studio yesterday printing Improvised Structures. The print is a series of vignettes from pen and ink drawings made in the late Summer and Autumn. Children’s camps, rope swings, fencing and barriers built from materials to hand.

The original sketches were drawn in dip pen and iron gall ink onto hand made 17th century recipe paper. The images were then reduced, re-drawn onto film and exposed onto litho plates. The print is an edition of 35, aprox A3 size, in 3 colours: pale grey/blue, autumnal brown and blue/black. It will be available at our open studios – Saturday December 10th and 17th. Price TBC but roughly £70 unframed, £130 framed.

Dave Trott – The Typographic Circle

A1 poster designed for Dave Trott’s talk to The Typographic Circle. We worked on a variety of ideas before Dave chose this direction. He suggested it be displayed upside down to better reflect the subject of his presentation – Creative Mischief. The design is stripped back to a minimum, following the Typo Circle’s visual language and using negative space to emphasize the title. The Typographic Circle logo is modified from “typ” to “trott”, also made into 1″ button badges. Printed by The Good News Press, on GF Smith’s Mohawk Superfine Ultrawhite Eggshell.

Dave Trott is an influential advertising creative whose 30 year career includes the “Lipsmackin’ thirstquenchin’ acetastin’ motivatin’ goodbuzzin’ cooltalkin’ highwalkin’ fastlivin’ evergivin’ coolfizzin’” Pepsi commercials and “Hello Tosh, got a Toshiba” ads voiced by Ian Dury. He now runs CST Advertising, writes Dave’s Blog and has published a new book called Creative Mischief.

In regione caecorum rex est luscus

A series of five monochrome posters created for Information is Currency, a Wikileaks themed group show held at The Book Club in Shoreditch, June/July 2011.

In April 2010, WikiLeaks published gunsight footage from the 12 July 2007 Baghdad airstrike in which Iraqi journalists were among those killed by an Apache helicopter, becoming known as the Collateral Murder video. Using a minimal graphic treatment and avoiding the sensational, we chose the most banal dialog from the helicopter crew recording – phrases common in every day conversations in contrast with the horror of the event. The title “In regione caecorum rex est luscus” translates as “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king”. From original latin text by the Renaissance humanist theologian Erasmus.

Apropos-Field

The project is a document of an unremarkable patch of land. An aerial style map produced at ground level. Photographed on a 5 mega pixel digital camera in roughly meter square sections in August 2001.

Nine years ago I wasn’t able to bring all the images together in a single application due to limitations of software/processing power. The image was finally compiled in August 2009 as a hi-res meter square artwork (700MB).

The location is not revealed. The field is no longer as it appears in this image – the land has changed owner and is currently maintained differently. The image pre-dates Google Maps. It references satellite imagery. The patchwork of green squares appear in bands as the photos are taken at different times of day and different weather conditions. Shadows appear and disappear and the exposures are inconsistent.

The project will be included at this September’s Anti Design Festival.

We designed a book to illustrate the new brand vision, which was distributed among delegates at the global sales meeting. Richard Legge was commissioned to photograph behind the scenes at the Musto factory. The cover was foil blocked.

Autumn/Winter 2008 Equestrian, Shooting and Lifestyle range brochures. A series of A5 booklet inserts, distributed in magazines. The Lifestyle brochure was photographed by Richard Legge – a one day shoot at locations on the Devon coast.

M&C Saatchi asked us to create press packs for the launch of Tommy Hilfiger’s new range of suits endorsed by Thierry Henry. The launch event was held at the Royal Academy in London. Packs consisted of a folder/brochure, with CD and headed stationery.
