Over the Summer I worked on a series of POS designs for Reebok, extending the established ZigTech creative across a range of clothing. ZigTech is designed for running and gym training -<span id="more-7005"></span> the innovative zig-zag shoe sole returns energy to the wearer and the clothing features Celliant technology which transfers sweat away from the body. I worked on a series of POS templates including landscape and portrait formats, hanger graphics and swing tags.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[A new men's toning campaign for Reebok.]]></description>

Concept development project with <a href="http://www.reebok.com/GB/">Reebok</a> for their men&#8217;s toning footwear range. Working with the Amsterdam marketing office to develop a campaign which explains the bosu-ball inspired pod technology of Reebok&#8217;s <i>RunTone</i> and <i>TrainTone</i> shoes to a male audience. The concept was applied to posters, vinyl graphics, countertop leaflet dispensers, and promotional items. <span id="more-6126"></span></p>
<p>We designed a core information graphic, showing the movement of air from one pod to another, plus bold typography to illustrate improved fitness and strength.</p>

Recent work on a new identity for photographer <a href="http://www.richardlegge.com"><i>Richard Legge.</i></a> Richard studied at the Norwich School of Art and has worked internationally for publications including Vanity Fair, Indian Vogue, The Observer, The Telegraph, The Times, Kraken Publishing and Blueprint Magazine. He has also worked with me on Musto projects and with Yamaha on brand commissions.<span id="more-5385"></span> The full logotype can be disassembled &#8211; the central RLP circle used as a social media avatar, the outer ring embossed/stamped onto limited edition prints.<br />

A series of POS layout ideas for Reebok&#8217;s range of pre-teen children&#8217;s trainers. We made characters and other graphic elements, as if drawn by children. These elements were used to represent the lively imaginations of kids at play.<span id="more-4636"></span> Princesses, woodland animals, hearts, flowers and stars for the girls &#8211; robots, astronauts, dinosaurs, tigers and super heroes for the boys. Less figurative, more graphic elements for the older children.</p>

In October 2009 <a href="http://www.ilsaparry.com/">Ilsa Parry</a> won the BBC <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/proginfo/tv/2009/wk37/design_for_life_feature.shtml"><i>Design For Life</i></a> TV series in which 12 designers competed for a placement at <a href="http://www.starck.com/">Philippe Starck&#8217;s</a> Paris studio. <span id="more-3662"></span>Ilsa&#8217;s products are designed for modern living, whether a ghost shaped low-voltage children&#8217;s night light, drinks glasses designed for outdoor use, seating concepts, etc. We wanted to create an identity that alluded to her unique and innovative approach and researched a number of graphic directions with Ilsa before arriving at the final idea. </p>

The identity needs to support Ilsa as her diverse business develops. It communicates a distinct creative voice and demonstrates the sophistication and quality of her work. The logotype will be rubber stamped onto packaging and foil blocked onto business stationery. </p>

Musto was established by British Olympic sailing medallist Keith Musto in 1965. Their product is worn by Ellen MacArthur and the majority of sailors in the Volvo Ocean and Vendee Globe races. <span id="more-2167"></span>They also make shooting and riding clothing, sponsoring members of the British eventing team. Our brief was to support Musto as a premium technical clothing brand who wished to extend their lifestyle product offer and town centre retail presence. We looked at every element of the existing identity and produced a series of options which were evaluated through focus groups. Throughout 2008/9 the new brand identity was applied to all communication, product, packaging, trade shows, advertising, catalogues, store designs and website.</p>

<h3>Logotype -</h3>
<p><a title="Musto Logotype" rel="lightbox" href="http://www.apropos-site.com/wp-content/uploads/static/musto_logo.jpg"><img src="http://www.apropos-site.com/wp-content/uploads/static/musto_logo.jpg" alt="musto_logo" title="musto_logo" width="390" height="390" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2190" /></a>The <i>Musto Block</i> logo is the cornerstone of the new identity. It implies creativity, technology, trust and consistency. In developing the logotype we experimented with completely new designs and versions of the existing logo. Directions were tested through a series of focus group sessions, run by Chris Forrest of <a href="http://www.the-nursery.net/"><i>The Nursery</i></a> &#8211; who also carried out canvassing and initial research into the brand which informed our design briefing. The final logotype incorporates a subtly modified version of the existing brand signature.

<h3>Brand Positioning -</h3>
<p><a title="Landscape Series - Richard Legge" rel="lightbox" href="http://www.apropos-site.com/wp-content/uploads/static/musto_photo.jpg"><img src="http://www.apropos-site.com/wp-content/uploads/static/musto_photo.jpg" alt="musto_photo" title="musto_photo" width="390" height="304" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2197" /></a>As part of our research we thought about what sort of personality the brand could/should communicate. Musto needed to become the brand that appeals to country, sailing and lifestyle markets &#8211; what do they all have in common? What cultural and creative trends could help Musto reach the broader market without alienating it&#8217;s existing client base? How do companies appealing to the same demographic present themselves? We looked at direct competitors but also sectors like technology and telecoms, financial services, healthcare, supermarkets, furniture and interior design, media and broadcast brands, etc. Five key brand values were identified &#8211; <i>Quality, Technical, Innovative, Reliable</i> and <i>Genuine.</i> These words describe the brand. Everything we do should support these values, be it product design, communication design, store interiors, trade stands, how we answer the phone, how we interact with our customers. <h3>Performance Anywear -</h3>

It alludes to the quality of the product and presents Musto as an enabling partner for outdoor people. The full-stop helps reinforce the message and adds a confidence to the statement. The word PERFORMANCE was retained from the previous logo, so as to evolve rather than revolutionise the brand. The tag line is presented in the Musto corporate font &#8211; Gotham Rounded. The rounded nature of the font creates a friendly technical message. It helps position Musto amongst contemporary brands from both the technical and creative industries.</p>

The Musto brand was applied to catwalk shows and stage graphics, presentations, display panels, merchandising equipment, delegate packs and signage.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[The Reebok Football visual language in it's third stage of evolution.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a title="08/09 Communication Signature" rel="lightbox" href="http://www.apropos-site.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/reebok_logo_4.jpg"><img src="http://www.apropos-site.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/reebok_logo_4-390x390.jpg" alt="reebok_logo_4" title="reebok_logo_4" width="390" height="390" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2316" /></a>2006/7 introduced a photocopied punk inspired graphic style. 2007/8 evolved to a hand-made DIY, protest banner inspired language. 2008/9 builds on the established counter-culture themes and goes back to basics with early computer graphics. <span id="more-2299"></span>Bitmapped images and crude line art create an anti-design authenticity. Graphics retain the simplicity of 07/8 painted and scratched type, whilst acknowledging the growing interest in 80&#8242;s technology and it&#8217;s inherent aesthetic. The communication signature for 2008/9 is a smashed version of the core design of the 07/08 signature. It references broken windows and shop/factory display lettering and signs.</p>

We combined crude pixelated hand drawn elements with low-res photography in bold colour combinations to create a distinctive tribal aesthetic.</p>

A serif display font was smashed up. Occasional characters were removed or turned upside down adding emphasis to slogans and messages. The process alludes to urban decay, vandalism and the irreverence of youth.</p>

Following the completion of the football visual language, the Reebok brand underwent a fundamental repositioning resulting in a new corporate identity and signature. Apropos- consequently modified the visual language to come in line with the new identity. This involved creating a custom &#8220;smashed&#8221; version of the new <i>Reebok Cachet</i> font.</p>

<p>Following on from the 06/7 campaign, we designed a new visual language for the 07/8 seasons. Some elements were evolutions of the previous identity &#8211; ie. the logo and photography brief. But with the graphics we decided on a more confrontational approach. <span id="more-2298"></span>Scratched and painted type and graphics produced a more aggressive message. While the competition continued in it&#8217;s corporate clinical technology aesthetic we wanted Reebok to stand out as the credible urban football brand.</p>

<h3>Painted &#038; Scratched Graphics -</h3>

Painted and scratched elements were widely used in product designs. In communication <i>lifestyle</i> graphics use painted type while <i>performance</i> used scratched lettering. Both have an amateur quality as part of the street authentic anti-design approach.<br />

We worked with <i>Skive</i> and Reebok to create a design that reinforces the aggression and irreverence of the new football campaign. As each new page loads it obliterates the last, as if over painted. Painted and scratched graphic element were created by Apropos, also a simplified custom version of the hand drawn type face.</p>
