Graphic RCA: 50 Years traces the development of graphic design at the college through a timeline of work produced by students from 1963 to 2014. The exhibition includes some beautiful work by the big names. But beyond the celebrity seeks to demonstrate a fundamental and consistent self-questioning and an innovative approach within the school driven by staff and students to question what is graphic design. On Tuesday evening I travelled into London for the latest BBC Connected Studio studio briefing at Shoreditch Village Hall. Connected Studios are the BBC’s way of recruiting external designers to brainstorm and develop digital projects in support of programming. This event was to brief designers interested in taking part in a two day development workshop, building and presenting ideas for the latest One Planet landmark series broadcasting in 2016. This week I made the trip to the wintersports trade fair ISPO in Munich. I’ve been visiting the show on and off since 1998 and last made the journey in 2011. Working on an identity for architect Jason Bagge. I made a custom type face which combines the classical characteristics of a serif type face with the modernity of a stencil design to arrive at a contemporary organic marque.
