David Ward’s exhibition Slow Time. The gallery was set up by Jim Ede (a Tate curator in the 20′s & 30′s) and his wife Helen Schlapp in the mid-50′s. The gallery and their home were converted from four run-down cottages in the area know as Kettle’s Yard.

“On Castle Street in Cambridge, is a beautiful and unique house containing a distinctive collection of modern art. Kettle’s Yard was founded by H.S. ‘Jim’ Ede as a place where visitors would ‘find a home and a welcome, a refuge of peace and order, of the visual arts and of music.”

Separate to the gallery, the Ede’s house is full of art, furniture and natural objects. The style is unsurprisingly similar to Moore’s home at Perry Green and Hepworth’s home in St Ives – they were contemporaries and friends.

Kettle’s Yard has gone through several stages of development and a further extension is planned. A selection of objects from the collection will be on display at Tate Britain later in the year.
